Laser hair removal (LHR) is an alternative to other hair removal methods (shaving, waxing, sugaring, depilatory creams) and can result in permanent hair removal. LHR works via a process known as selective photothermolysis. Here a laser that emits light of a specific wavelength is used over the skin. The melanin (the molecule that gives hair its color) in the hair absorbs the laser light which causes the melanin to heat up and this heat damages the hair follicle. Damaged hair follicles subsequently either fail to produce hair or produce hair that is finer and weaker - After multiple cycles of laser treatments (usually 4 to 8, depending on the body part and hair characteristics) near permanent hair removal can be achieved. Yearly or semi-annual maintenance, ‘touch up’ sessions can be used to address any recurring hair growth.
To optimize results, LHR treatments are customized with laser settings chosen based on hair color, hair type and skin tone. This along with a thorough consultation session and initial test of the procedure on a small section of skin ensures the best results and minimizes the incidence of unnecessary side effects.
